This reading reflection post should cover pages 1 through 55.
In addition to sharing your original thoughts about the beginning of Colson Whitehead’s zombie novel, please focus your composition on grappling with the following topics that develop in the first fifty-five pages of the novel:
1) Look very closely at the first six pages of the novel. Pay close attention to the words Whitehead uses to introduce you to the narrator, Mark Spitz, and his family. These paragraphs represent Mark Spitz looking back at his childhood and past from the vantage point of the post-apocalyptic present.
2) What is the impression Whitehead gives readers of New York City? What significance does this city possess in the United States imaginary? In the Mark Spitz’s mind?
3) On page 9 of my copy, the narrator introduces an interesting concept: The “American Checklist.” What is on this checklist? How does it apply to people’s lives? Do you feel the pressure of meeting this checklist in your own life?
4) What is P.A.S.D.? What are the symptoms? How is P.A.S.D affecting Mark Spitz? Say the acronym out loud a few times. What English word does it sound like to you? What do you think is the significance of this homophonous pronunciation?
I look forward to reading your thoughts!!
