Immigration Paper

Complete a 2-3 page paper (double-spaced, 12 pt Times font) in which you will analyze select pieces of media utilizing a discourse analysis approach. We can understand discourse as the ways in which a topic is talked about, represented, and otherwise constructed in the public imagination. So, to conduct a discourse analysis, you will need to examine the metaphors, symbols, and the underlying messages in visual and textual representations of immigration. You will need to provide a work-cited page that includes any sources that you used or outside media that you analyzed. You MUST reference and properly cite at least one of the Week 5 readings in your response.

ASSIGNMENT:

In Leo Chavez’s Covering Immigration, he conducts an extensive study of U.S. magazine covers from the 1960s to 1990s to argue that these covers do not simply reflect public attitudes but actively shape national understandings of immigration. So, let’s extend his argument with an update. Looking at these more recent immigration covers from Time magazine, what can we say about the national discourse on immigration since the 1990s? Carefully analyze 3 TO 5 of the images in the time magazine covers below and draw from the articles to support your argument.
