Main Question Post. Good Evening! My name is Dr. Hayes and I am a developmental psychologist. Pregnancy and what to expect can be terrifying, especially for first time parents. The best way to take on a challenge is to learn as much as you can, and prepare for the “what ifs.”
Babies are like sponges. They absorb everything around them, whether it is good or bad. That is why it is so important to nurture, support, and positively influence your babies’ social and emotional development. Our children are a reflection of us. So it is very important that we mold them and teach them how to be upstanding, influential, and positive members of our society, so they can “pay it forward” and the cycle of positivity will continue.
There was an article written by Halberstadt and Lozada in 2011 entitled Emotion development in infancy through the lens of culture. Halberstadt and Lozada (2011) stated that parents are the first source of influence during infancy and toddlerhood. This statement is important to understand because as parents, we are our children’s first teacher. Children learn by sight. They see something; they imitate it. To that point, Halberstadt and Lozada (2011) also mentioned that scaffolding emotional behaviors are highly effective if parents utilize the scaffolding technique. In the textbook, Theories of Human Development, Newman (2015) explained scaffolding as a method that teaches children how to evaluate and structure information and then to use that same information throughout life to solve other problems and complete tasks. In an article written by Delen, Liew, and Willson (2014) they simplified scaffolding as the relationship between the student and the teacher. Scaffolding is necessary for concrete development. This means that a positive relationship between the parent and child is necessary for proper development.
Kopp (1982) believed that children are capable of control, and are aware of social demands between 12 and 18 months of age. This means that children as young as one are receptive to their environment. Through parents’ and infants’ mutual interest in shared activities, culture is instilled (Keller, 2007).
Any positive interaction with your children will nurture, support, and enhance their social and emotional development. Some suggestions I have to infuse that parental bond are reading to them, reading with them, eating meals together, and enjoying cultural activities together as a family. These suggestions will link parent and child together. They will enforce that nurturing spirit. These suggestions will strengthen that support bond, which will increase comfort and reliability in the relationship.
The first year of children’s lives is the most important as this is the time period in which children are absorbing everything around them. They see everything. They will try anything. Let’s use this time period to introduce their social and emotional development to aspects that will saturate their culture and set the foundation for their futures. Thank you.
